Michael Parenti -- Support our Troops?

The exercise of U.S. power is intended to preserve not only theinternational capitalist system but U.S. hegemony of that system. Why are we locked into such empty political rhetoric? In a recent post "Support Our Troops?" I tried to look at the mentality of supporting our troops and why I believe support is horrendously misplaced in this nation. The post was later published as a letter to the editor in the Modesto Bee. Another letter writer, a few days later, hoped that I was not the first person these soldiers see when they come home. I beg to differ. But first we must look at the mentality and why it is so pervasive. The "support" of our troops has been wielded over us like a sword of Damocles by the current Administration. It has been used to garner support for not our troops but rather the war. I will not and cannot support any war. How then can one who completely disagrees with war "support our troops"? It is not really possible. For any change to happen we have to look past this truly empty political rhetoric and find the heart of the issue. I "support" our troops in that I want them all brought home, alive and unharmed, now! Why is that such a difficult concept for "patriotic" Americans to understand? Forget the political rhetoric and bring our troops home now.

Honestly we are still in Germany and Japan from WWII should we pull out of there as well. We still have troops in South Korea should we leave there??? We have troops in so many places trying to help sooooo many people should we just leave every country and stop being as some call it, "Impirialistic". Well then the world media would broadcast the world struggles and conflicts and blame us for being Isolationist. There is no middle groud, no gray area. Either we are all in or we fold.

It doesnt matter why we went to Iraq its done we are there but now we need to finish what we started. If we just withdraw that shows the world we have a very serious lack of commitment. We have been a country for how many years and we still cant run an even near perferct government, military, or country, and the people think we should have a new government and military formed in a country that has been in a subdued civil war for thousands of years in just 8 years????

rex 84, was a conspiriacy theory, and americans have been dieing to DEFEND america, and its freedom, we already have freedom. Just because we have people in power here who have been selfish doesn't mean the safrafice we soldiers make is for stupid reasons.
suichi56 (January 1, 1970 at 7:29 am)
No, we DONT call Iraqi people terrorists, we call members of Al Qaeda, and the Taliban terrorists, people who oppress and kill those who have differen't views from them. Its not the Iraqi people who are fighting us, Its insurgents, who dont want us there. We dont go around shooting random people. Learn what you are talking about.
