In simplicity it refers to the days of vynil and cassetttes where a song was on side b of the recording as opposed to side a.

when they make an album, the whole creating/writing process, they'll probably come up with about 20 songs, but choose what they feel are the best 13/14 or whatever to go on the album..the rest of the recordings become b-sides that usually get put on a cd when they releace a single =]
