The idea of evolution has been around since the Greeks. Darwin simply posited the idea of Natural selection. Natural selection only proves the already existent traits survive when nature gives them advantage. That means, yes, the survivors already exist. Doesn't prove evolution at all.

As Orlan54 said, Jefferson was dead before the Origin of Species was published.Also, what the fuck does spontaneous generation have to do with evolution? Furthermore, who in the fucking world said spontaneous generation is accepted nowadays?Finally, I am not going to get even close to arguing against your claim about Darwin's grandfather. I checked out CapnOAwesome's "argument from Newton." There are plenty of creation scientists, many in incognito for the purpose of maintaining their jobs. Because once they let their ideas out the bag they become inquisitioned by the evolutionary establishment. Secondly, you believe you came from a monkey, Capn'.

Spontaneous generation was discredited before Jefferson was even born and Lamarckian principles (which are also false)do not contradict Jefferson's quote. The views of Erasmus don't contradict the quite either. The quote is very representive of a deist ideology, which Jefferson had and does not dismiss evolution. Hence the quote "their regenerator into new and other forms." Deists believed there was a designer but he didn't intervene in earthly affair, he simply put the universe into motion.

Thomas Jefferson was well aware of the spontaneous generation and Lemarkian sorts of evolution. Darwin's grandfather Erasmus also taught a form of survival of the fittest.
