Anyway though, going back to the point that this started on, that religion holds back space exploration. Yes, it does to an extent. There are many religious people who don't want us "entering God's domain." Yet if you look at other things, such as George Bush's speech about space exploration, or how Mike Huckabee, a candidate for president who ran on religious rhetoric, wanted to get man on Mars, you start to realize that maybe this belief that may seem against science isn't against all science.

Exactly. Glad we can somewhat agree on something. I used to think almost exactly what you think, that people are good but it's their religion that messes them up. But then I started paying attention to all the good religious people, and I started to realize that people aren't good or bad because they follow a religion that can be interpereted in multiple ways. There are people, some believe some things and some believe others, and some do bad things and some do good.

"Because if Mr. Neighbor decides to [snip!] be a good Christian, then I don't care."I agree. People following a belief are entitled to do so. Freedom of religion etc."if Mr. Neighbor decides to go around telling everyone that atheists are evil [snip] then I will be angry with Mr. Neighbor, not religion"The reason I would be upset at religion is because their books tell them to be that way. But again, more reasonable people wouldn't believe such hatred, right? Again more to think about.

"But that's their fault for not listening to what you have to say, not their religion's fault."Now that I think about it, I would agree on that point. Some people can be downright obtuse... Wait a minute, aren't I being that myself?Seriously I think I've just caught myself doing it."I only hold these people accountable for what they say they did."I'll have to think on that one some more. I still feel religion is at fault but you do make a good argument which I'll need to process.

Yes, I have, and the average creationist doesn't listen to what you have to say at all. But that's their fault for not listening to what you have to say, not their religion's fault. Although I must say it is very entertaining to argue with them.Although I used to do what I assume you have done, which is pull the "religion caused the Dark Ages and crusades" argument. I have since then become very individualist and realist so I only hold these people accountable for what they say they did.

But see, I don't find that true. Because if Mr. Neighbor decides to go to Church on Sundays and be a good Christian, then I don't care. But if Mr. Neighbor decides to go around telling everyone that atheists are evil and will kill everyone, and people don't treat me the same way after that, then I will be angry with Mr. Neighbor, not religion as a whole. I disagree that people exercizing religion is a problem. I think that people using religion against others is wrong. |
