June 2008Haiti is facing a major food crisis as riots break out in the capital Port-au-Prince. Five people have died, the Prime Minister was forced to resign and authorities fear the worst is yet to come! All produce, even eggs, are imported here, leaving Haiti at the hands of the global market. Although blessed with fertile land, farmers have no machinery and are forced to use their hands. A farmer says "we cannot compete with other farmers who have the technology to back them". People are even eating mud cookies to relieve hunger. The Haitian government have turned to International crisis funds for immediate food relief but what will happen in the long run?

Thank you for taking the trouble to post this informative feature. It is heartbreaking in the extreme - a sign of the times to come for all of us, I fear. Any of us around the globe may be next to face this situation. This tradegy has been orchestrated... you need to research who benefits (Someone always does)

We all need to be human and help our fellow people in need of help.We would like that if that was us!

Wow you're ignorant and heartless.

Once again all of Haiti's ills are because of the USA. If the USA wasn't involved Haiti would prosper.

Oh Ok, I didn't know that but I guess I should have knows it is the USA who is holding back Haiti. If the USA wasn't involved Haiti would probably be a paradise by now. Is France responsible for any of this?

Haiti being self-reliable is not in the US' best interest. That's why the US invested campaign funds to promote an elitist candidate to oppose the popular one during the last elections and has consistently interfered with global politics in the name of "democracy" (read capitalism).

The problem is not that Haitian farmers don't know how to farm but that their leaders would rather pander to the US by giving it ridiculously low export rates instead of subsidizing its farmers, who cant compete with American prices.

The US didn't want Aristide because he was pushing for agricultural reforms that would have interfered with US monopoly on agricultural markets in Haiti.

jessee jackson should stay there. All I hear is "give us something" I dont see or hear, "we're going to do it, were determined". Natural law demands that they fail because of this.
