i know colin, this song is about leaving scotland , and coming to australia,if you would have sen whre he was brought up you too would have been looking for a new/real life. it was the pits. the kids in the street would bite the postman, many a time colin would get into fights just for looking at someone, thus the song."ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME' so thats what this somg is about leaving his home town which to this day is thie pits. good luck in the future colin your friend and former mentor . paul

Actually they do indicate who says they have a plan, it's the singer in reply to someone's comment about the light shining in.

I think it's about death. It seems like he's facing his own mortality, and the "real life" is death. "I awoke today and suddenly nothing happened"

It's about unrequited love. He sees the life he's supposed to have and who he's supposed to have it with, but it's always just out of reach. Even though he keeps retreading the same paths, the same thoughts, the same pursuit, the prize just can't be won. But he doesn't give up, he can't lose hope, he's always hoping to "throw one more dice" and "check my machine, there's sure to be that call"

I think this song is about the writer failing to listen about his purpose. "And you say be still my love, open up your heart and let the Light shine in. Don't you understand I already have a plan." The lyrics do not indicate who says I already have a plan. For The Plan to be accomplished the writer needed to listen. He needs to let the Light shine in. He can continue be distracted by checking the horizon or checking his machine, but he lacks proper focus.
