I admit to likeing the original versions and still not quite 100% sure who created the song (obviously deep south blues). Although the Animals version is one of my favorite songs of all time, Eric is a natural singer and quite a bit of power in his voice! Also quite funny my life seems to have followed the same path as the words lol.

taken from 'Folksongs and Ballads popular in Ireland - vol 1', 1979 by John Loesberg: One of America's legendary bluesman was a black singer named Huddie Ledbetter, nicknamed Leadbelly. Playing a homemade 12-string guitar he went around the southern states collecting and composing songs in his own inimitable style. 'Cottonballs at home', 'Bourgeois Blues' and this one were popular through him. The song has recently been adapted from it's original blues-style into a more flowing piece.

wrong. animals covered this from bob dylan, which covered it from a blues guitarist (not sure, but probably leadbelly).
