I wonder if elliotsavestheday was being sarcastic. Because that comment was just ridiculous. It's comments like that that give the western pleasure horses a bad name.

Don't listen to elliotsavestheday. A western pleasure horse's head shouldn't be low enough for the horse to trip over! The top of the horse's ears should be even with their withers. It can be slightly lower but not that low!

For all the English riders I've seen here. Western is MUCH slower. Your trot should be at the pace of an English walk, and your canter should be at the pace of a fast walk. Oh, and your horse should have it's head so far down it looks like its going to trip over it.

these horses need 2 keep their head still, and have a constant, low headset, even though i am a big appy person.

oh yeah there was a class just like that at a show i went to, but it was only walk and trot and no jumping, it was called "Walk Trot Pleasure" instead of "Walk Trot Canter"... because we didn't know how to canter yet

western is def. much slower than english...the aqha's description of a western pleasure class is "a horse that is a pleasure to ride...." watch a few videos on youtube of people doing western its hard to explain in 500 words

okay, so Western Jog = English Trot, Western Lope = English Canter... but why are they going so slow? just so they don't overtake each other, or is it customary that you go that slow in a competitions for western-style-gaits??
Magwian (January 1, 1970 at 7:29 am)
what are they supposed to be doing? which horse is doing it the best? (i ride English)
