It's all the best of Bret Easton Ellis, Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities", Memphis design, modern Japanese aestetics, androgyny, sampling, the merging of electronica and pop, and high-concept videos. Everything. The years of the 80s were the most extreme in the best and worst of everything. They were not boring. Ever.
