Ah, Eric Moussambani, aka Eric the Eel. I remember seeing this on television when it happened. Warmed my heart to not only see this fellow from Equatorial Guinea (who trained in the only pool in his entire country, which was 20m) actually swim his heart out, but also to see my countrymen and women cheer him on wildly for his gallant efforts. Sadly, he has not competed again since.

Actually, you tool, this really did happen. It was an officiasl trial. The man is now widely known as Eric the Eel, and is well regarded in Australia where this happened during the 2000 Olympics. The commentators weren't official ones, but a pair of popular comedians (pseudonyms H.G. Nelson and 'Rampaging' Roy Slaven) doing their own version.
