Una de ellas (según estudios de Roberta M. Humphreys) la estrella es una muy grande y luminosa hipergigante roja. La otra (en base a los estudios de Massey, Levesque y Plez), es que la estrella es una supergigante normal, con un radio estimado en los 600 radios solares. En el primer caso, su superficie se extendería más allá de la órbita de Saturno.
