I've often heard people refer to this song as a hard rock turning point in pop but, listening to the lp version 20 years later, I just didn't see it. I get it now. Like watching live peformances of his on the tour supporting TANX, I finally understood his influence on punk.

Marc Bolan had gotten chubby, was drinking and drugging and treating his body badly while living in the US with his girlfriend. When he realized that he was going to be a father, he got his act together, stopped the drugs, stopped the brandy binges, started exercising and got himself back into shape. That is why he was skinny. When he was younger (not that he was old here, he was 28 here) he was small and slim.
