I always had a more pessimistic (or different sort of optimistic route), where he remembers getting with a girl who he at least sees as way too good for him, and thinks about how lucky he was to ever have known her at all. Then again, that's the sort of story my personal experience is in line with, so perhaps I more naturally gravitate to such a feeling. Lines like "It's such a drag when you live in the past," make think there's at least something to my opinion, though.
